Airalo eSIM Services Guide

A comprehensive catalogue of everything Airalo offers — and how to use each service effectively

1. Local eSIM Plans

Local eSIM Plans

Local plans are tied to a single country and connect to that country's domestic networks. They are typically the most cost-effective option when visiting a single destination. Data allowances range from 500 MB to unlimited, with validity periods from 7 to 30 days.

Best for: Single-country trips, business travel to one location, short city breaks.

Limitations: Does not work in neighbouring countries; if you cross a border, you will need a separate plan or a regional upgrade.

2. Regional eSIM Plans

Regional eSIM Plans

Regional plans cover a defined group of countries under a single data allowance. Airalo offers regions including Europe (40+ countries), Asia (20+ countries), the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. A single regional plan eliminates the need to purchase separate local eSIMs for each country on a multi-destination trip.

Best for: Multi-country European tours, backpacking across Asia, business trips covering several markets.

Limitations: Data is shared across all countries in the region; speeds may vary by country; not all countries within a named region are always included — check the plan's country list carefully.

3. Global eSIM Plans

Global eSIM Plans

Global plans provide a single data pool usable across 80–130+ countries, depending on the specific plan. These are Airalo's most flexible offering, designed for frequent international travellers or those with unpredictable itineraries.

Best for: Round-the-world trips, digital nomads, executives with frequent multi-continent travel.

Limitations: Higher per-GB cost than local plans; coverage in remote or less-developed countries may be limited; speeds are subject to local network conditions.

4. Airmoney & Top-Ups

Airmoney is Airalo's in-app credit system. You can load funds onto your Airalo account and use them to purchase plans at a slight discount compared to direct card payment. Top-ups allow you to add more data to an existing active eSIM without purchasing a new one, provided the plan supports top-ups.

Important: Not all plans support top-ups. Check the plan details page before assuming you can extend your data mid-trip.

5. eSIM Compatibility Service

Airalo provides a device compatibility checker within their app and website. This service cross-references your device model against a database of known eSIM-capable hardware. However, this checker is advisory — the definitive test is attempting to add an eSIM in your device's settings.

Key requirement: Your device must be carrier-unlocked. A locked device — even if eSIM-capable — will not accept an eSIM from a different carrier. Contact your UK network provider to request an unlock if needed.

Boundaries & Exclusions

  1. eSIM plans do not include voice calls. Use VoIP applications (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype) for calls.
  2. Plans are non-refundable once the QR code has been scanned and the eSIM installed.
  3. Data validity begins from first use (or from purchase date on some plans) — read the plan terms carefully.
  4. Hotspot/tethering is permitted on most plans but prohibited on a small number — check before purchasing if tethering is essential.
  5. Fair Use Policy (FUP) applies to unlimited plans: speeds may be throttled after a defined threshold (typically 1–5 GB).
  6. Regional plans do not cover every country in a geographic region — always verify the country list.
  7. eSIM cannot be transferred between devices once installed.
  8. Deleting an eSIM profile is permanent — it cannot be reinstalled using the same QR code.
  9. Some older or budget Android devices may display eSIM compatibility but have limited functionality.
  10. Airalo's coverage data reflects partner network agreements, which can change without notice.
